As part of water quality improvement goals at Rogers Williams Park, Roosevelt Lake Recreational Path was designed to mitigate negative effects of stormwater run-off and water fowl control, plus provide an amenity to park users. 1,000 linear feet of paved boulevard was removed and areas re-graded to create vegetated swales and rain gardens. A twelve foot wide pedestrian path connects the Japanese Garden and Roosevelt Lake to the larger park pedestrian circulation. Native plantings include large areas of meadow and lake buffer species in addition to ornamental trees, continuing the Roger Williams Park arboretum tradition. Construction was completed in the spring of 2013.
