With the need to develop a new maintenance facility, Gardner + Gerrish was retained to provide landscape planting design and screening studies. Membership had concerns over the proposed structure’s impact on aesthetics and play on the 3rd hole. A Sketch-Up model was developed for member presentation to portray views of the proposed building and to demonstrate proposed grade changes and tree plantings from several key vantage points. Town officials requested extensive screening from the adjacent public road and community garden. Gardner+Gerrish also worked with the engineer and environmental specialists to site a rain garden and associated planting.

This is a parcel re-development project on Main Street in scenic coastal Connecticut. Working with the architect and engineer, this 19th century structure is being transformed into a restaurant and second floor residences. Gardner+Gerrish developed a simple landscape plan that provided vital screening and visual interest all while maintaining the character to blend in with this historic neighborhood.

Hyde Park, MA

The design team was retained by the City of Boston Parks and Recreation Department to prepare a comprehensive master renovation plan for the George Wright Golf Course. Within the planning timeline, the design team conducted a detailed scope of services that included extensive analysis, design alternatives and resulting recommendations for this Donald Ross designed golf course.

Areas of review within the golf course complex included not only the 18-hole golf course but also the clubhouse amenity, maintenance facility, signage and the irrigation pond. Key aspects for review on the golf course included erosion and drainage; golf course playability and pace of play; cart path and pedestrian circulation; and landscape and vegetation.

Implementation of the Master Plan included re-building the 13th hole fairway to solve perennial drainage issues forcing hole closure and re-building tees. The green was expanded left, creating new cupping locations behind the re-built greenside bunker. Consulting included cart path and player circulation.

Since the Master Plan has been completed, the course has gained in popularity to a point where it was ranked #29 Best Municipal Golf Course in the country by GolfWeek in 2010.*

This wooded residence was selectively cleared of mature pine forest in order to create a more open design for the current owner. Selective plantings were retained and others relocated along edges to allow for light and views towards the residence. Native plant species are juxtaposed with granite boulders in groupings at the perimeter of delineated lawn areas. To the rear of the property, additional plantings are located along a bluestone terrace which opens to expansive lawn areas. The existing slope was retained and planted with ornamental grasses interspersed with boulders and a lower lawn terrace abuts the mature pine tree line.

Tim was responsible for construction observation and general project management of this popular central Massachusetts 18-Hole course. Involvement included: everything from site clearing to hazard placement to finished green construction. The project was the first planned golf community in the region and includes many distant views of the local country side and Mt. Wachusett. Sited on an old New England dairy farm and developed by the owner, the course features a variety of holes including the short postage stamp par 3, 17th to the three shot par 5, and 9th playing over 620 yards.

Tim was responsible for implementation of phase one of the master plan which included rebuilding over 40 greenside bunkers, adding several tees and restoring lost cupping positions of over 15,000 square feet to the greens. Course was originally designed by Seth Raynor, but had been renovated several times over the last half century and had lost its classic look and play characteristics. Bunker renovation centered on removing heavy framing and creating flat floors. Over a third of an acre of approach expansion emphasized the new bunker locations and style. Further phases are in planning to include restoration and additional fairway bunkers, fairway modifications, renovation of the practice facility and a new short game practice area.

This was one of the more unique projects to be involved with as a golf designer. This award wining private estate garden was designed as a practice area for an avid golfer. It includes multiple tees played to two bentgrass greens. There is an array of shots to execute and even a practice bunker conceptualized by the 10th hole at Pine Valley’s Devil’s rear orifice. In addition, a particular request was to provide an adjacent flat surface to adequately land a helicopter.
